La composition des eaux potables, de surface, résiduaires industrielles s'apprécie au travers de paramètres physico-chimiques ou biologiques : 
- soit globaux (matières en suspension, turbidité, demande biochimique en oxygène ou DBO, demande chimique en oxygène ou DCO, azote total, phosphore total, hydrocarbures, carbone organique total ou COT, etc…)
